In Brussels (before/after the wedding)
Despite its small size, the city of Brussels is subdivided into 19 "communes". Each one has a unique character, and it is designated by a postal code (e.g. 1000, 1050, etc). In the image above, you can find the shaded area in green which corresponds to the recommended areas to make the best of your visit to Brussels.
A quick description of the recommended neighbourghoods:
Brussels centre (1000): It's the heart of the old city, with attractions such as the central square and many museums. It's the easiest neighborhood to walk to all main attractions and take public transport from the airport at the Centre Station. The neighborhoods of Sablon and Marolles are part of the city center as well, which are great for visiting antique shops, galleries and cozy cafés. The Avenue Louise area is well known for its luxury shops. In the vicinities of the Schuman and Luxembourg station you find the European neighborhood, which hosts all the European Union institutions and has a very international vibe
However, we recommend to avoid some specific areas such as the surroundings of the Porte de hal and Hotel des Monnaies metro stations, the immediate vicinity of the Brussels canal (blue area on top of the image), and the vicinities of the North stations and Botanique metro station
Ixelles (1050): This is we live. We love Ixelles because of its very international, dynamic and young spirit. There are very good public transport connections to access the city center and other attractions (~typically 15-20 minutes from the center, depending on the specific road). Neighborhoods in Ixelles include Chatelain (we are based here), which is well known for its great restaurants, art galleries and independent boutiques. Along the Chaussee D'Ixelles road we find the St. Boniface and Fernand Coq neighborhoods, which have a relaxed vibe and are great for taking a beer in the many terraces. We also find the The Matonge neighborhood which is famous for its african roots. Flagey and Cimentiere d'Ixelles are great for nightlife, mixing a student crowd with more relaxed bars and restaurants. South of Ixelles, we find the Bois de la Cambre, one of the main lungs of the capital. Its surroundings are calm residential areas with a lot of greenery
St Gilles (1060): This commune is the heart of the world-famous Art Noveau architecture, and a haven for the artistic/bohemian crowd of Brussels. The Parvis de St Gilles area is a meeting point for ethnic foods and drinking belgian beers under sunny terraces. Its local character is unmistakable, specially when the local team Union St Gilloise is playing a game - the football fans assure a festive environment. It has good connections to the city center though the tram system
However, we recommend to avoid the South Station area (Gare du Midi / Zuidstation), Porte de Hal and Hotel des Monaies metro stations.
Etterbeek (1040): Bordering Ixelles and the European neighborhood, it's a mostly residential neighborhood with a good dose of charm. It is great option if you are looking for a calm environment with great connections to the city center by all public transport options
In the chart, you can also see in red some other communes which are not recommended as a touristic stay. These include: Schaerbeek, St Jose ten nooden, Forest, Anderlech, Auderghem, Molenbeek, Uccle, Laeken (including near the atomium), Zaventem (the airport town) among others
Visiting Belgium
Weather
June, July and August are the warmest and sunniest months in Belgium, making them the ideal time to visit. Temperatures range from cool mornings around 15 °C (59 °F) to warmer afternoons above 25 °C (77 °F)
We recommend packing a good sunscreen, and a light jacket in case of light summer showers
Moving around
Inside the city
Major cities in Belgium, such as Brussels, have a well-developed public transport system, as well as the availability of ride-hailing apps such as Uber
We recommend using these systems as parking within the city can be very limited and uneconomical. There are areas of the city centre that are entirely pedestrianised
In Brussels, you can pay for your public transport ticket directly with your credit or debit card using the terminals on board trams, buses and metro stations
Find all the information on fares and itineraries here:
Outside of the city
The national train system takes you to a large number of places of interest, such as the cities of Bruges, Ghent or Antwerp. A typical journey takes about an hour
There are also frequent connections to other European destinations such as Paris, Amsterdam or London
Find all the information here:
For other destinations that do not have train stations, especially in the Walloon region of Belgium, we recommend renting a vehicle.
Card or cash?
In Belgium, the vast majority of businesses accept credit or debit cards to make payments. It is recommended to use VISA or MASTERCARD cards, which are widely accepted
It is recommended to carry only limited amounts of cash, which can be withdrawn from ATMs (even with international cards, provided they are part of the Visa or Mastercard network). Unfortunately, as in many European destinations, tourists can be targets for pickpockets, so it is best not to carry large amounts of money in crowded places. Therefore, it is better to be safe than sorry
As a last option, there are currency exchange offices at airports and in the city center. The exchange rate and other associated fees are usually less favorable than through direct withdrawal of money through ATMs
